BILL BOWERS

Bill Bowers is a distinctive figure in contemporary American theater, widely recognized for elevating the art of mime within modern performance. As an actor, mime, and educator, Bowers has built a career that bridges classical physical theater traditions with contemporary storytelling, earning critical acclaim for both his solo work and collaborations on stage and screen.

Bowers’ performance career is marked by a rare versatility. He has appeared on Broadway in productions such as The Lion King, where his physical precision and expressive control contributed to the show’s visual storytelling, and in The Scarlet Pimpernel. Beyond Broadway, he has performed extensively in regional theater, and international venues, often incorporating mime into dramatic and comedic roles in ways that expand the boundaries of the form.

An important dimension of Bowers’ work is his commitment to LGBTQ+ visibility and advocacy. As an openly gay artist, he has used his platform to highlight queer stories and experiences, often weaving them into his solo performances with candor and humor. It Goes Without Saying reflects on his journey growing up gay in rural Montana and navigating the performing arts world, offering audiences an intimate perspective on identity, acceptance, and resilience. In film and television, Bowers has contributed both as a performer and movement specialist. His expertise in physical expression has made him a sought-after collaborator for projects requiring nuanced, nonverbal storytelling.  He served as the movement coach for the television series American Classic starring Kevin Kline, Laura Linney, and Len Cariou, and the Off-Broadway production of Marcel on the Train starring Ethan Slater. Bill co-stars in the Apple TV series Before with Billy Crystal, American Horror Story Season 13, and in the feature films Lost Cause and Two Weeks’ Notice.

Bowers’ accomplishments have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. His solo work It Goes Without Saying has received 5-star reviews and top honors at festivals worldwide. Bill holds an Honorary Doctorate from Rocky Mountain College, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from Urban Stages, New York City Children’s Theatre, and ATME, the Association of Movement Theatre Educators.
As an educator, Bowers teaches at prestigious institutions including NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Stella Adler, Esper Studio of Acting, Neighborhood Playhouse, and the American Mime Theatre.  He has been a visiting professor at Williams College, Harvard, Princeton, Ohio University and the University of Wyoming, among others. His teaching is considered an extension of his artistic mission: to demonstrate that silence, gesture, and embodiment can be as powerful as words.
